Hi All - this is my report. Wanted to provide a little more color here.
One of my neighbors cut down a bradford pear, so I came in yesterday to make some ~12” rip cuts to to turn logs into bowl blanks for the lathe. On the first piece, I noticed the saw was not cutting as well as it had a couple of weeks ago. It was going through the pear considerably slower than the post oak in my last batch.
When cutting, the blade was wandering to the right. After the first cut, I inspected things and noticed the blade was probably too far forward on the wheel. The side guides weren’t locked and were ~1” from the blade. Thrust bearing position seemed OK. I am not a pro at these adjustments. I am basing these comments on the popular Alex Snodgrass recommendations that have been linked here before.
At this point, I probably should have stopped but figured I would try to keep cutting since pear is prone to cracking quickly. Bad idea. My second cut wandered worse, and I had to stop mid cut as the angle of the blade was just getting more extreme. Cue the blade being pinched and an embarrassing/tedious removal process with chisels in which the blade is now seriously bent.
I would like to donate the $$ for a new blade and take the class on setups/adjustment for the bandsaws. I know members aren’t allowed to adjust this one, but I want to be able to better check/inspect before taking on these bigger cuts.
