Problem Type: Equipment
Workspace: Woodshop
Asset: Laguna Small CNC
Summary: Controller + USB connection not working
Additional Info: CNC, first run went 10% then quit. I modified the MMG file slightly (edited the tool dynamics, recalculated, saved and ran a second time…). Second run is running noticeably …. faster. Made it further (20% then stopped). And after the failed second round I can’t get the controller to read the usb drive. …So this seems like a controller/USB connectivity issue. Not sure how to work around this. Tried two different USB thumb drives (both of which work fine in the PC, so I don’t think it’s a USB drive issue)

Report generated from a filing. This report has also been sent to Asmbly staff, leadership, and space leads with any contact info that was provided. Provide additional photos or resources here to help. When the problem is resolved, ensure it is marked.

I’m scheduled today to replace the spoilboard. I hope all will go well. I’ll post here if any problem like this occurs.

The USB connection on the controller has been flaky for a long time. You should always transfer the file from the USB onto the controller and run it directly from memory rather than running it from the disk. That way the run won’t fail if the USB drive disconnects. The file transfer is done from a file menu accessible on the controller somewhere.

I’m scheduled right before you. I’ll see about any issue with the controller, but I’d also like to see how to replace the spoil board. Mind if I tag along and do that with you?

John,

You’re very welcome to join us for the spoilboard replacement on the Small CNC tonight from 7–9 PM. There may also be one or two others there, including Andrew Lochbaum and Austin Kasper—and as I always say, the more the merrier.

A bit of background: over time, I’ve decided to adopt the Small CNC as the tool I support. As a result, I’ve handled the spoilboard replacement the last two times.

I’ve attached a first-pass spoilboard replacement procedure that I wrote over the past few days. If you take a look at the procedure, you’ll see that the surfacing step isn’t especially efficient. I’m hoping we can figure out a less manual way to remove the final ¼″ of material.

I’d also like to replace the T-slots, but I haven’t been able to find suitable replacements online yet—so that will have to wait for another time.

Bri

P.S. Lastly I am not secure in doing anything with replacing controller with a new B58 one we already own, and will have to leave that up to James Freeman.

Thanks yall

Yeah - pretty confident it’s the usb getting disconnected

just happened to me on the big cnc

I’ve googled but can’t figure out how to copy the file locally. If someone knows, can they post?

Thanks!

Its menu( manual function) > operate file> copy file . then when you go to run select internal files to choose from and select.

I have more detailed if you search the forum but that’s the jist of it
