there is only one maker of fiber nails, Raptor. i have always known their quality control to be excellent
if they are being shot into the same wood as before but breaking, then the problem is in the gun. check psi first. there are some wear components that need periodic replacement too.
only the Omer 17P.32 nail gun can fire the Raptor nails we use. it’s an expensive specialty item- actually the one we’re using is mine. the Omer was designed to use the 17ga Raptor composite plastic nails and nothing else. there were incidents were someone needed a nail gun and tried to load their own metal nails into the Omer which can definitely damage it
that’s not entirely true, though. the Raptors are 17ga, unlike all metal nails. metal nails are 18, 16, and 15ga.
in the long long ago, I tried to cheap out and fire them with a hft porter cable air nailer. i modified the channel of an 18ga to take the 17. the magazine feed wasn’t perfect but it did work for a nonprecision hack, it worked surprisingly well. “nonprecision” was taking a Dremel cutting wheel to it
iirc it worked well enough for years then something wore or broke and it started breaking nails and jamming itself almost every shot, which required taking off the nose plate and cleaning out the nylon debris jammed inside
i mainly brought that up be because it would be super handy to have a battery powered Raptor nail driver, and ditch dragging the compressed air line around the bed. Such a thing does not exist- but, it probably could, by starting from an 18ga battery nailer and modding it for 17ga Raptor. probably a good idea to mod the magazine too
ah, i see now Raptor is not the only game in town anymore. Spotnails and Senco come up, but it looks like they’re 15ga. the 17ga did work really well for nailing onto the mdf spoilboard on the cnc, it we strong enough to hold reliably yet you could just break them off easily when done and leaving the stubs in the spoilboard had minimal impact on its life. 15ga might be less friendly to remove but i can’t say for sure
