July 7th CNC Special Interest Group (SIG) Recap & Next Meeting on Sunday, August 4th!

All,

Here is the July 7th CNC SIG Recap (the recorded Zoom meeting is linked to at the end).

  1. @atwatsoniii created a gorgeous walnut, epoxied table using Fusion 360. He did two pours using a sealant to keep the epoxy sticking to the wood and avoid bubbles.

  2. @bwatt used the CNC to create an incredible topographic map of Mount Rainer after only working on it for ONE WEEK! Absolutely incredible.

3a. @SteveW shared with us an apple box he made—those are boxes that photographers use for lighting a such. Unfortunately the only picture I snagged was of it disassembled, but it was great!

3b. @SteveW also reminded us that one of the great benefits of using the CNC at Asmbly is that, after training on the CNC, the CNC-certified member will receive the makerspace version of vCarve. vCarve is a software that allows you to design (CAD) and set up your toolpaths (it tells the machine how to cut the material) so you can easily create your masterpiece on the CNC. It’s a $700 value but you have access to it right after the training.

For next month’s meeting on Sunday, August 4th at 9am at Asmbly in the Multipurpose Room, the theme is animals, kids, and/or nonfunctional decorative art. Let’s keep it artistic, and light it up!
