I was able to get fusion to drive probing operations. You start by eyeballing your origin, and gcode will probe the part, and update the WCS for you. You’ll find this under “Probe WCS” under the “Setup” menu.
The benefit is that you can get higher accuracy, and also do not have to manually jog the probe. It is very useful with a stop, since you can just clamp your part down, and run the program.
The rub is that the Tormach post-processor that comes with fusion does not support probing. I am not sure why. However, someone has made their own post-processor which does support probing: http://xoomspeed.com/CNC/FusionPostProcessor.htm. I used this for all my machining, not just probing, and it seemed to work fine. It was last updated in 2024.
I did one quick experiement, but I believe the tool number is not required to be 99 for the CAM driven probing.
The XoomSpeed post processor also has a way to measure with the probe as well, without the very expensive Machining extension. I haven’t tried that yet.
Yep I use that post almost exclusively. Many of his tweaks make their way into the official Tormach post. The new PathPilot also has better probing routines built in, not sure if we’ve upgraded to that at the shop yet. Lots of improvement at probing bosses in only one axis that you used to have to do by hand.
While you’re at it, can you see if Samba can be updated on the Tormach PC? @Kenneth reported that it works with older versions of Windows, but not the latest.
Yep, win10 and mac see the network share without issue, but win11 dropped samba 1 support (it can be enabled) and changed things relating to guest logins, which are used on the tormach. Even with those options enabled, I don’t have win11 connecting to the tormach currently. Happy to come in sometime to help troubleshoot, I got as far as checking the samba config file but wasn’t familiar enough to make changes.
I was just there but missed this post. I’ll poke around on the PC next time I am there. I’ve literally only clicked the mill button on it, so not sure what is under the hood.
