Table Router Broken?

I’ve used the table router twice before earlier this year and it worked well. On Sunday, I tried to tighten the collet nut by using a second wrench around the nut next to the shaft (as shown in the PDF in wiki.asymbly), and the nut next to the shaft loosened. I’ve never gotten the “spindle lock” to work, and I didn’t see any way to keep the router shaft from moving. Is it broken or do I not know the correct protocol for tightening the collet nut? Thanks.

The second wrench goes on the flats of the shaft itself. I’m not sure what “nut next to the shaft” you are even referring to. You were likely trying to disassemble the router itself

I don’t know if that’s even the manual for the current router that’s in the table. But for any router, the method for tightening it stand-alone doesn’t really apply when it’s in the table.

The spindle lock dial should be ignored; it has to be done by feel. But the lock has been loose recently and probably needs replacing.

To make it easier to understand, there is a small wrench and a bigger one. The small wrench goes under the collet of the router and the bigger one on the collet. If you used two bigger wrenches, you probably un-seated the shaft of the motor from the housing and should be checked for proper operation. The spindle lock is not necessary under most “normall” operations. It is there to assist if you’re getting a lot of vibration during use. If the router bit is dull or unbalanced it would cause vibration. Also if you’re over loading the router (taking too much in one pass) would also give you plenty of vibration. The locking mechanism is designed to slip if you over tighten it. As alot of people are not familiar with “cam lock mechanisms” over time it feels loose or worn out. Those specific parts are hard to get as Jessem doesn’t really consider them easily worn or wearable. If there is nothing else wrong with the lift, it should be safe to operate. As Ethan stated play with the mechanism and you should feel when is lock position before it slips to come around. Last time I checked it, the line indicating that is lock was off or out of position. So go with the “feel” rather than the indicating line.

Thank you! YES, I did loosen the 24mm nut some. I went in this morning to visualize the router and saw where the smaller wrench is used on the shaft, when tightening the collet with the larger wrench. It seemed that the nut closer to the motor was tight, again. I appreciate your response. Thanks.
