Progress Report: Sheikah Tower from Breath of the Wild: LEDs question

Hey yall!

Printing is done on my (now closer to 8ft) tower! Painting and assembly will be coming soon in a YouTube video .

I intend for the core to light up, which is about 6ft tall. LEDs will be mounted to an aluminum pole running through the interior. I’m planning to do 3 strips of 6ft long high-density LED strips for good light coverage and smooth fade effects.

I plan on controlling them with an Arduino Nano running WLED, I’ll buy whatever power supply necessary for them as well (which is gonna need to be beefy to drive that many LEDs).

Does anyone have recommendations on LED strips to use?

Link to your YouTube channel? I think I already subscribed but want to make sure (and make it easy for others to as well  ).

I haven’t worked with LEDs enough to have a recommendation, but I can tell you we used these ones for the Asmbly LED signs you see at the front desk and in the e-lab. Can’t wait to see this project and watch the video!!! :awesome:

Hey Jeff

I have some experience with WLED, if you’d like high density, individually addressable LED strips that are affordable, I recommend WS2812B 60leds/m IP30 (I’ve gathered WS2812b is a popular strip in the led world). If you’re willing to wait, can get 5meters for ~$15 off of Aliexpress.

DrZzs is a solid resource for all things LED on youtube: youtu.be/tXvtxwK3jRk?si=5WL6OY6qAaAWskan

I’ve done a very similar build with vertical LED strips on a cylinder. I created a paper lantern build I’m pretty proud of, I have bill of materials logged, breakdown, + demo here: blakekostroun{DOT}com/?page_id=1968

I hope these links are a good jumping off point. I look forward to seeing progress pics of the build!

Cheers,
Blake

edit: ooh @valerie’s amazon link is the LEDs I’ve used.
