Powermatic Drill Press Stop Mechanism

There was a recent question about how the stop function works on the drill press in the wood shop. @berkeleyB checked it out today to make sure it was in good working order and here’s the steps!

These steps are also detailed in the manual on the wiki

  • Loosen the locking lever.
  • Zero the lock to the top of the work piece with the black numbered dial.
  • Using the drill press feed wheel, lower the bit to the desired depth and hold in place.
  • Rotate and tighten the silver locking dial until it stops. Do not monkey twist this.
  • Tighten the locking lever.

I cover this in Woodshop Safety class; I assume the other teachers do as well.

Thanks for this. I was wondering about this, just yesterday, but made do without.
I didn’t think to check the wiki, and if it was taught in the Wood Safety class, I forgot.

NOTE: I just read the manual, and saw that the silver ring gets turned counter-clockwise to lock. I would not have thought that.
