I found an adjustable wrench at the back of the oscillating spindle sander before class today, as if someone had been using it on that machine. The only wrench that should ever be used in changing out spindles is the short wrench that will be found hanging on the side of the machine.
That wrench was intentionally cut short to limit how much torque it could deliver. It should only be used to remove a spindle if you can’t do it by hand. Spindles should be installed by hand tightening only.
If you cannot loosen and remove a spindle using that short wrench, something has gone wrong; stop and report the problem to a steward. Do not use a longer wrench. I guarantee that you will only be making the existing problem worse by doing so.
