Illuminated Stained Glass

I’ve been making stained glass for about a year now (shout out to Blue Moon Glassworks for the awesome classes!) and have quickly run out of windows in which to hang my pieces. But making these illuminated frames opens up so much surface area! Room for more projects!

This also might be the most inter-disciplinary project I’ve every done: vinyl pattern cut on the Cricut, glass work, lots of soldering, frame cut in the wood shop (as a woodworking newbie, this class was super handy! Asmbly | Woodworking: Box Building Techniques ), and some electronics to light things up!

I haven’t met any other stained glass artists at Asmbly, but if you’re out there, I’d love to meet you and chat!

That’s a brilliant idea of lighting up your stained glass “windows.” Asmbly used to have a stained glass window class, however I think the instructor moved away. This is something I’ve always wanted to have go at. If we can drum up support and someone to teach, I believe there are enough members who would support it.

If there was interest, I’d be open to teaching an intro stained glass class! It’s such a fun medium and I’d love to share it with others

I’ll be reaching out Rachel! Reviving the stained glass class has long been on my list of program goals. We even have some supplies and tools left over I believe!

Check in the electronics room. There were some basic tool kits, a couple of grinders, supplies, and boards in a plastic tub. Far corner. You could also reach out to the Blue Moon stained glass folks to give classes at Asmbly. They’re usually very agreeable and very knowledgeable. The setup you have (if is still there) is for the foil technique which happens to be the basic. I have a couple of grinders that you’re welcome to use if the class happens.

Great to know Asmbly may have some tools on hand, especially grinders. I’ll take a look this weekend to inventory what we have/ what tools we would need to offer a class.

I’ve done an intro class at ACC, and made the frames at Asmbly as well!

I have since set up at home with some supplies and a grinder, but we haven’t made anything recently.

I know @SavHarvey does some stained glass at home for the maker market too!

I’ve always love the idea of illuminated stained glass and definitely rooting for someone to start up a class at asmbly because people ask me frequently! I usually just refer them to blue moon as I’ve seen their class in session when I bought some glass from them. I’ve been doing the foil technique for the past couple years (mostly 3D) for my online shop so I’d be more than happy to bounce ideas off of someone if you have the interest to teach, I will say though I’ve never even taken a formal class  learned a lot over the past couple years in my own research though.

There are supplies in the lab! They’re in a storage bin in the corner between the work benches (underneath another bin, probably). You’re welcome to (read: please!) take them out of there any time.

Thanks for the support everyone! I have some random supplies in the staff office that are for stained glass as well. I’ll make sure they are documented when we meet up Rachel! I’m happy to bring in other orgs to teach; but I always love to be able to support our members who want to share their knowledge as well. Maybe it can be a triple feature and we can do a full project class for the illuminated displays. I’m excited to discuss further Rachel!

I also have never taken a formal class. When I started there was a studio off Yeager lane (Cathedral Glass) where I got my supplies and tools. Nancy (one of the owners and not sure if that was her name) used to walk me thru different steps/process orally and then I would go home and practice (I felt like a doctor :)). I also learned a lot from reading The Stained Glass News that was provided free from that studio. I’m not a fan of the foil process, have never liked it. I usually stick to came. I have always liked stained glass but it has been a while since I made anything meaningful. But sometime this year i want to finish a project i started waaay back in 1999. Is a TX state with blubonets in the center. If I’m around, I would help set up the class.

I didn’t know ACC had stained glass classes. Your work is lovely! I’d love to chat with you more about your frame making. I’m very new to woodworking so you shouldn’t look too closely at the corners of my frame

Thank you!!

I’m taking my first stained glass class next week at Sundazed glass studio, been wanting to try it forever! So excited to see fellow stained glass enthusiasts, would definitely sign up for any activities asmbly might organize. Also shout if you need any help
