The drywall in the laser welder room has finally been completed. Now we need to paint it, so I’m putting out a call to see if any volunteers can do this, hopefully in the next few days.
I’ve prepped the room pretty thoroughly. You should be able to start painting almost immediately.
We need to paint all four walls, the ceiling, and the inside of the door. This includes the interior of the vent holes at the front of the room. Everything that can be seen from inside the room with the door closed should be painted, and nothing else.
This includes painting the conduit on the rear wall, plus the sides of the electrical boxes, but not their fronts at this time. (Normally I don’t like painting conduit for aesthetic reasons, but here we want to eliminate as many reflective surfaces as possible.) All of these circuits, plus the light outlets in the ceiling, are currently shut off at the breakers. The vent circuit is still on and you can use it via the timed switch to keep the air clear.
Everything that should not be painted is taped off. This includes the switches, the compressed air line, the fronts of the electrical boxes, and the inside of the signal light recess on the front wall over the door
In addition, there are some wood pieces that belong in the room that need to be painted. We need to paint the front and edges of the flat piece and everything but the back of the E shaped pieces (which are on the bottom in the photo below).
All of the drywall and wood need two coats of primer. Yes, two: first, because fresh drywall is very “thirsty” and sucks up paint, and second, because the top coat is a special, expensive, fire-retardant paint. We should have enough, but I’d like to stretch it as far as possible.
The walls are currently still covered in drywall dust, but this is a feature, not a problem — don’t clean them first! The first coat of primer goes over the dust, thickening the paint slightly and helping it fill in any scratches and detents in the drywall mud. This is an old drywalling trick.
The conduit and electrical boxes probably only need a single primer coat.
Everything needed to paint the primer coats should be in the room already. If you need additional painting tools, there are many in the new stewards closet just across the hall
The top coat paint still needs some mixing done; I’ll provide it tomorrow. Everything inside the room that was primed will need one coat of it.
