Fiber laser question

This is mostly curiosity but is the fiber laser working? Does it fall under the laguna cnc for operational class? I have not to my knowledge ever seen a class on the schedule for this piece of equipment.

The fiber laser is functional, but requires a safety enclosure. We are currently building out space for it in the expansion. It does not currently have a class, but it will be its own class. Look for more news as we update the community on expansion progress.

Thank you for the quick repky james.

The fiber laser requires a safety enclosure that we have lacked space to build. We will be building this in the new space. We hope to have it online when the new space opens March 1st, otherwise certainly soon thereafter.

The fiber laser is a metal shop tool that operates differently than the CNCs and the other lasers. It will have its own certification class. @jamesfreeman is currently leading up the efforts to get the fiber laser online and is preparing that class.

[Started my reply before James’s but got sidetracked, hence the repeated information.]

Do we know if Fusion 360 will be the preferred CAM option like with the Tormach?

It will definitely not be Fusion360 — full 3D modeling isn’t very useful for an intrinsically 2D tool. I believe James said it has its own software, something standard to metal cutting lasers. It would be nice if it could use Lightburn like our other lasers, but apparently that is not an option.

CYPCUT is the software. It is integrated into the controller. I have not verified, but I don’t believe Lightburn will be compatible.

If Fusion is your design tool my assumption is that you can export a sketch as DXF and use that for making tool paths on the fiber laser. I can’t wait to find out.

Yes, typically you model your part in Fusion, then either project the part into a sketch plane or directly use your sketch (however dashed construction lines will be included). Then use that dxf file in Cypcut for the actual cutting. Cypcut is free and there is a full featured simulation feature so you can see the process before the machine is running, it’s easy.
