@EEatx, I’ll stop by ceramics this weekend and take a look. My guess is that those are vinyl covers, which wouldn’t be terribly surprising.
If they are indeed vinyl, and we’re looking to repair rather than reupholster, this should work:
Do you know how many chairs are in need of repair? We might have to do them in batches to give the adhesive a chance to cure.

David caught this one chair with the split, assuming others might be on their way since these have been getting a lot of use lately. Next time I’m in the area, I can make rounds if you haven’t beaten me to it to check to see if another is on its way out.

Love a repair!
I looked at the chairs on Sunday – it indeed looks like vinyl and thankfully just one has ripped (so far). The way it tore makes me think it’ll always experience a decent amount of strain, but it’s still worth a repair attempt. I’ll give it a go Tuesday afternoon if I can find decent backing fabric.

It’s not a looker but it’s holding at the moment 
The chair is back in Ceramics. I’ll be traveling over the next few weeks – do let me know if the tear re-opens and we can try something else.
